Bucket List

I am the luckiest person in the World...or at least I think so. My reasoning for this thought is the way I live my life and love my husband. For a little background, my husband is 13 years older than I (I have always been one for the mature looking features!)and he has a long family history of heart disease. Three years ago he underwent open heart surgery at a the age of 48 years old.
So that night while in ICU waiting room I made a Bucket List of things I wanted to do with my husband. A bucket list...things I wanted to do or see or experience before "we" could not enjoy them together.
This past summer we crossed somethings off my list in one trip to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. Now I know for some, the idea of a rodeo is not on your radar. However,for me, this was a dream come true. The rodeo action, the tradition of the event, the generosity of the people and the breathtaking beauty of the land was captured in one trip! My trip to CFD was not only a fulfillment of a Bucket List item, but an unforgettable experiencece.
We also visited Estes Park, Colorado. The majestic mountain scenes are truly God's creations. This Texas girl had to battle anxious feelings due to driving along the mountain's edge with no guardrail or the signs warning of beware of the black bears. This Colorado adventure was a grand time.
The most important aspect of this journey, was that every step, every picture, and every new adventure was with my husband. My bucket list gave me so much more than what I expected. I encourage you to make your list and discover what things you will discover that you were not even looking for.
My bucket list continues to grow as we continue to cross things off of it. These long lasting memories is what life is all about. Be sure to make your bucket list today!

Ms Mickey

The following writing was read before friends and family as part of a memorial service for Mrs. Marth Frost. A true Texas treasure.

Good afternoon, am honored to be here to help celebrate the life of a true Steel Magnolia…. Martha Frost…or As I knew her as Ms Mickey. My name is Barbara Magana Robertson…

Ms Mickey has known me my entire life. In fact she has known all by brothers and sisters their entire lives. And not many people can say this but she has known my father Sam Magana since he was 13 years old.

For every Magana birth, graduation, anniversary, and wedding she has shared these moments with my family…as family should.

For years I have had the sheer pleasure of decorating the Christmas tree for Mr and Mrs Frost. As many of you may know, Ms Mickey loved Christmas. Her passion for Christmas is something that my mother, Delia Magana and I shared with Mrs Frost. Decorating the tree was something more than hanging lights and ornaments. Mrs Mickey knew that Christmas time meant she was going to see people she loved…she would see family.

Ms Mickey has an extensive collection of ornaments. Some of the ornaments were of once dolls she and her sister had as children. She has several cross ornaments that Harry Gordan himself gave her as Christmas gifts. But my favorite by far are her extensive collection of hallmark ornaments that she collected throughout the years. These ornaments move, whistle, chirp… they make all kind of noises and best of all light up. But most important…made her happy.

Her adoring son, Ford, a few Christmases ago gave her a special gift that gave her pure joy. This gift was a stuffed reindeer that sat in a wooded rocking chair…and when you turned it “on” it sang that silly song “grandma got run over by a reindeer” . She cherished this reindeer. She would asked me to turn it on, while she watched me decorate the tree….she would giggle like a little girl at certain parts of the song. When she heard enough she would say "ok turn it off". I am not sure if it was the reindeer, the song or the fact that Ford gave it to her that brought her so much joy.

For those of you who know my father, you know that Christmas decorating is not something he does. Give him a horse, a rope, some cattle …but Christmas decorating is not his forte. However when Ms Mickey called a few Christmases ago…. to her beloved Sammy and said “Sammy… I need some hay”…..My father said,"how much"? …she said, "I am not sure I just need some". My Daddy being the forever loyal staple in her life…. wanted to fill her request. So he loaded a bale of hay and went over to their house. When he arrived she raised her hand and said "I need about this much"… only about a hand full. You see, she had been decorating her nativity scene. My father was glad to help her put the finishing touches on her manger.

Through the years I have had many memories with the Frost family…but one of my fondest was this past Christmas. I was over at their home decorating the Christmas tree. Mr frost just had his dinner.This was the first Christmas that Ms Mickey could not sit up and watch me decorate their tree. MS Mickey was already in failing health and bed ridden and she was in her makeshift bed room. Mr Jay decided to he wanted to she his wife that evening. And told his Nurse….”Nurse I at want to see my wife". Now this was not as easy as you would think. But after a little determination Mr frost made his way in his wheelchair to the foot of Ms mickey’s bed. When she realized he was there, in a clear and valid voice she said the following words… I adore you, I adore you, I adore you Jay Frost…and with a steady voice he said I love you to Mrs Frost…good night Baby. Although this was a private moment…I was touched by their love for one another that has endured over the years.

This reminded me of the time I asked Ms Mickey about the first time she saw Mr Jay…in her words…”he was a handsome young man speeding across Galveston waters in a boat I did not know who he was…I just knew he was going fast”. I said, "Ms Mickey how did you finally catch him"…she replied, “I am not sure I guess he slowed down”.
I am glad that he slowed down enough to have his life’s greatest jewel….his baby, Mrs Frost.

The Bullying Business

The days of school yard bullying have grown far beyond the playground. With the start of the school year just weeks away, school districts, child care providers and parents are preparing to face this growing issue. Cyber bullying, threatening text messages and sexting are some of the real issues that plague students of all ages. The retaliations due to bullying have made headline news across the nation. There is no community that is left untouched by these modern day terrors. A real need for proper training of our school educators, child care providers and parents is essential to being able to combat bullying and other pestilent concerns. Appelbaum Training Institute, located in Sugar Land, is a pioneer and a true leader in training educators and parents in an array of issues that face today’s youth. Appelbaum Training Institute (ATI) provides the skills and the knowledge to help students of all ages cope with these rising concerns.

The Appelbaum training Institute was founded by Maryln and Marty Appelbaum. Maryln has been a trailblazer in the child care industry for decades. According to Maryln, “Bullying has always been around, but it is growing due to today’s kids who are ‘all about me’ kids.” “They are used to getting what they want, and some enjoy hurting other kids.” She advocates that bullying must be addressed, dealt with and stopped. “Parents need to be involved ...one on one time with their children, whether they are pre-k kids to high school students….start with the counselor, go to principal…take it to law enforcement” says Maryln.

Marty has led the company to being awarded one of the best small companies to work in Houston three times. He and Maryln are a “dynamic duo” leading their company to make a difference. Marty says, “Our goal is to reach every parent and educator we can and give them solid information they can immediately implement so they see immediate results.”

Maryln and Marty have taken their seminars, books, and expertise and turned it into accessible products through the use of social media. Everything they teach can be found on their web site. On-line courses for C.E.U.’s and clock hours, training tools and videos, teacher appreciation gifts and other merchandise are all available at your fingertips. Maryln sends out a daily electronic teaching message to over 50,000 recipients. In her messages she covers a remarkable range of topics and gives a meaningful tip to apply to real life scenarios. Pending child care legislation in Texas in regards to staffing to child ratio is a heated topic. “More staff, means more money for the parents to pay…we should really focus on proper training” expresses Maryln.

School bells will be ringing soon, and hallways will be filled with kids who will not only be dealing with the stresses of a passing grade but also the struggles of their own generation. These challenging economic times have many businesses tightening their budgets. School districts are also finding themselves facing cutbacks and possible layoffs. One non-profit organization in Fort Bend County is doing what they can to connect parents and educators to free services that are offered throughout the County. ACHIEVE Fort Bend County is a group of business and community leaders who volunteer their time to promote these services and to prevent a student from dropping out.
This fall two events will highlight ACHIEVE’s mission. On September 11, 2010 a dropout recovery walk will be held in Fort Bend County. Lamar CISD, Stafford MSD, Fort Bend ISD and Needville ISD will all be participating. Volunteers will fan out through various communities to encourage students back to school. Door to door, they will visit student’s homes that have not attended the new school year.
The second event is a Mentoring Conference that will be held on September 29, 2010. The conference is for businesses and residents to learn the basic skills to learn how to be a mentor to a student. It is imperative to mentor a student who may be at risk of dropping out. A mentor can be the difference in a student’s life.

Roof Ready

Hurricane Season is upon us. Believe it or not, there are still many of those unsightly blue tarps on many roofs today. They serve as a constant reminder of Hurricane Ike and his fury. But there are some things you can do now to prevent some costly damage.

First, as a homeowner you should check for missing or lifted shingles. Look around the yard for fallen or blown shingles. This could avoid a costly repair now versus later.

Another preventive is to check for leaks inside the home. A leak in the attic, ceilings or along the wall could be a minor repair now that could protect your belongings during a storm.

Also a little lawn care could really help prevent damage. Trim back trees that may be up and overgrown onto the house. Avoid a costly repair on damage due to unmaintained limbs that could fall.
Don't forget Skylines or fireplaces. Check the seals or the caulking. Remember a minor repair now or a little maitenance could save your money. Be sure your insurance policey is updated is current.

Most important…a blue tarp that may be left over from Hurricane Ike is not going to protect your belongings during a Hurricane or strong tropical storm.

Rock of Honor

Commissioner Patterson and other Fort Bend officials were on hand for the installation of a military monument. The rock may be viewed by the public at the Precinct 4 county building located in Sugar Land at 12919 Dairy Ashford road thanks to the efforts of Commissioner James Patterson. Commissioner is thankful for the donation and feels it is a great way to honor our troops and veterans.

The Rock Place has donated the monument as a tribute to all military branches. Commissioner James Patterson, JP Jim Richard and Constable Troy Nehls were on hand for the donation. The Rock Place is a business based in Utah and is opening up a location here in the Cypress area in June. The company creates large rock art with different themes sandblasted in to the stone. They owners have a huge commitment to veterans and troops. Many of their partners have huge military connections.

Robert Rusby and Steve Dahle are two Vice Presidends of The Rock Place with their own Military stories. Robert himself is a veteran and served in the Navy. He gets very emotional talking about the company and his personal commitment to the veterans and troops.
Steve grew up in a military family. His father made a career in the Air Force. Steve as a child went to school in Germany while his father served in the military. He has great memories of his father and he himself even being fluent in the German language. Steve signed up for the draft during the Vietnam war but the draft ended before he was selected to go.

Portland Rosen, One stroke at a time!

From Fort Bend Focus Article by Barbara Magana Robertson

As most High School Seniors are looking forward to Prom and Graduation, one Sugar Land teen is focused on defending her State title. Portland Rosen is taking it to the links to defend her State 5A championship title in golf. The Clements High School senior recently won her third straight district individual title and helped her school team win the district championship title. Now, she is heading into regionals and then on to State. “Defending my title is a goal, and I just want to play my best. My friends are all worried about what dress they will be wearing to the Prom or who they are going with, I am just focusing on my next tournament” says Rosen.

Portland has already committed to playing golf for the University of Virginia this fall semester. She is excited and looking forward to be able to play at the college level. Portland states, “I am thrilled to carry on the family tradition and look forward to getting my degree.” She will be following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, Jorden, a Syracuse graduate and Courtney, a senior at Florida State University. Both Rosen girls played softball at the collegiate level. Younger sister, Darby, is currently playing several sports at Clements High school.

As a junior, Portland had an exceptional year. She went unbeaten on her brilliant path to becoming state champion. Every tournament she entered she won. This year, she continues to impress and demonstrate her phenomenal talents. At the district tournament held in early April, she won by 25 strokes. “I remembered the course from last year and was more comfortable this year. I did not feel nervous. I play better when I am relaxed” admits Rosen. Her dedication to the sport is unfathomable. Portland practices hitting the ball, putting, chipping or driving every day. During the unusual harsh winter we endured, Portland would escape the cold temperatures and rain soaked days by practicing indoors at local facilities.

As a 12 year old, Portland’s father took her to the golf course. There he put a golf club in her hand and said to her to “hit some golf balls.” It was not long before her father saw his daughter’s natural ability. Portland remembers her father saying,” Portland you’re a natural.” She has been dedicated to the sport ever since. “My parents are my biggest supporters. They are at every tournament no matter what” beams Portland. Her mother, Robin Rosen, cheers on her daughter and always has an encouraging word for her. Her father, Rocket Rosen, is often on the golf course practicing her golf game with her. However Portland is quick to give credit to her Coach Paul Marchand, as being a major influence in developing her skill and her swing.

Portland is not your typical teenager. She admits that she misses some of regular high school activities due to her golf game. However she believes the decision she made years ago to be dedicated to golf is the right choice for her. Her goal in life is to be on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour. “I really would like to do that, see where golf takes me after college...I am going to try my best and give it all I have to make the LPGA tour” says Rosen. While she enjoys reading books, getting pedicures and playing other sports, her commitment to golf is undeniable. She is a true ambassador of the sport. “I would like to see more kids get involved in golf. It is a sport that both boys and girls can enjoy” says Rosen.

Later this month, beginning May 10th in Austin is the State championships golf tournament. Portland is once again favored to be on the top of the leader board. Good luck to Portland, and bring home the championship.

Allergies? You are not Alone!

Sneezing, wheezing, stuffy head feeling? Or maybe it is the watery eyes, running nose and constant headache feeling that is keeping you feeling under the weather. You are not alone. Spring time has been brutal for those of us who suffer from allergies.

Foreign substances that are airborne cause for our immune systems to react. The foreign substances are known as allergens. Pollens, dust mites, molds and danders are some of the forms these allergens come in. Amazingly many of us suffer from allergies year round. Spring and Fall are the seasons that peak most people's allergies.

Have you noticed the yellow substance on your car. This powdery substance is pine pollen. It can be washed off with a good rinse from the water hose. But be warned of the yellow stuff, it can scratch your car if you rub it to hard.

Allergies can be treated but not cured. In severe cases, a trip to the doctor for a shot will help most sufferers. However there are prescription and over the counter medications that will give you relief.

Most people inhale, touch or swallow the allergens. So careful on what you breath, it could make you miserable!

Over two million people went to this year's Houston Livestock show and rodeo. Once again breaking the all time attendance records. Next year, rodeo goers will be able to see a new monument that will serve as a permanent tribute to our Troops. This monument is a donation made possible by several special people who forever have given our service men and women a fitting salute.

The story begins with a Veteran named Bill Callahan. Callahan served in Vietnam where he lost both his legs and broke his back while serving for our Country. But his story is not one of despair, it is one of survival and commitment. Callahan, through surgery and prosthesis was able to walk again. He became know in the mid 80's as the Walking Man. Callahan's mission was to bring attention to Veterans' issues and their treatment. It was on one of those walks that Callahan was struck by a car. His injuries left him bound to a wheelchair but alive to continue his passion to bring attention to our Troops.

It was during the first week of the rodeo at Reliant park that Callahan and his service dog Tailor spotted a new vendor. A Utah based company, The Rock Place, displayed their pieces of rock art that serve as flag poles, monuments and fire pits. Each rock is cut from a rich colored quarry in Utah and then hand sand-blasted to display some type of artistic image. Callahan was interested in a fairly large flag pole piece that had all the Military branches insignias displayed on it. The rock caught Callahan's eye enough to try to buy it. Lack of funds and price did not discourage Callahan.

The Rock Place is a business that works with many charities. It is said every piece of rock art they make has some kind of story. On this day, they became part of the story. The fine people who make up the The Rock Place decided to donate the Military monument to Callahan. Callahan, accepted the donation with misty eyes and sincerity. But this veteran, whose mission is to bring attention to our Troops, did a very selfless act and donated the rock art to HLSR rodeo officials. Callahan's donation will be a permanent monument on Reliant Park grounds where all attendees will be able to see and appreciate our Armed Forces.

The rock art flag pole is expected to be place at the north end entrance of Reliant Stadium. This is the spot that Callahan and rodeo official Leroy Shafer have agreed would be a perfect location for all to see. It will be viewed by many, but only took one man's mission to see it happen. We salute our troops, we salute Bill Callahan!

"And the Oscar goes to...." is a phase that many of us will be hearing tonight as we sit and watch the Academy Awards. We will be glued to our HD plasma screens to see the latest fashions being worn by the starlets of Hollywood and rejoice in the winners' acceptance speeches. However some of us will be watching and sharing on twitter. Twitter, the fascinating on line tool that allows you to communicate with others. It is a fun way to watch and socialize with "friends" on big televised event.

Already, twitter has brought together strangers online to share in common interest such as sporting events, news events and social events. Recently, the Winter Olympics in Canada brought together a worldwide audience to enjoy and share different views, spur on rivalries and give your comments. Watching the Olympics allowed for people to give their own commentary on figure skating, share thoughts on amazing video or cheer on their favorite athlete all while utilizing twitter. Amazingly most users were kind and demonstrated good regard for each other. During the USA vs Canada gold medal Hockey match, the dishearten and the overjoyed shared their thoughts.

Social media has made it easy for us to communicate with a world wide audience. Twitter has made it simple. Through a few easy steps you can sign up for this free service. To share your insight while watching tv takes some typing skill and a twitter account. The use of a hashtag (#) will allow you to search for the topics you are interested. For example tonight "oscars" is already the top trending topic. It is fun and interesting to see a tweet that shares you same thought or maybe not from someone else. You may share a laugh, get mad or learn something new

Barbecue, What's Cooking?

Every year I look forward to the time when the Rodeo rolls into town. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo runs for several weeks starting the last weekend of February. The fun starts with the world's largest barbecue cook-off. Several hundred bbq teems come together and throw one big party. Trust me it is one big party.

This party is like no other. It is held on the grounds of the Reliant Park. More specifically the parking lot is turned into a tent city. What goes on under those tents is a Texas size party with all the trimmings. Most of the teams our sponsored by corporations, companies and businesses. Thus most of the tents are private booths. However there is public serving of bbq plates, live music provided and beer sales for the price of one ticket.

Attendance to the cook-off for this year was a record setting 218,000 people. All these bbq goers fought to find a place to park, battled high winds, braved cold temperatures and the constant search for the elusive wristband. The cheap little paper wristbands are the key to getting access to some of the booths. The waiting in line to get into a booth, to get a plate to eat or drink, and of course for the port-o-potty is all a part the BBQ cook-off experience.

Now this may not sound like fun for some but for others it is a must do. There is no other place where you can enjoy live music or dj, dancing or talking and of course the people watching. I am already looking forward to 2011. Are you?

Keeping Commissioner Patterson!

There is something about politics that draws me in like a warm fire on a cold night. You get to close to the fire you may get burned, but if you stay too far away you just may be left in the cold. So with early voting on going and the March primary just days away I hope Texans find their way to the voting polls. Here in Fort Bend County there are several races that will result in runoffs. However there is one race that I find irresistible to comment on and that is County commissioner precinct 4 race.

For the first time in a long time, presiding Commissioner James Patterson has an opponent. So the importance of voting during the primary for this local race is very important. Commissioner Patterson has done an outstanding job for the county. He has demonstrated a superior awareness in the community. From running water for residents to keeping history in a street name, Commissioner Patterson has been there. He can be found at just about any charity auction, church auction or fundraiser giving a helping voice. He has been a champion for the rights of those with disabilities through his tireless efforts with the Arc of Fort Bend County.

Most of my friends know Commissioner as our former high school principal. He touched and encouraged so many students during his days at Dulles High school. These days, many of us may have moved out of the area, but our parents and other loved ones still call the area home. He still inspires the youth and cares for the seniors of our community. It is very comforting to know we can spot him in a crowd and know him, as he knows us.

It is important to take the time to vote. It is right to support Commissioner Patterson, without him, would you really know who your Commissioner is?

Play Tackles Tough Teen Issues

Sex, drugs and drama is not the plot for an HBO special, but instead it is the subject of a play, "Playground of Love". This production hits all the issues that today's teens face and their parents fear. Parents have a tough enough time to talk to teens about homework and house chores. This play encourages an open communication between teens and their parents on real life issues.

The play is based on a book "Teenage Playground of Love" written by author Charmette Fontenot. Fontenot directs and acts in the production. The play follows the lives of three teenage girls and their quest to find love. However, their journeys introduce them to face sexual relationships, betrayed trust and teenage pregnancy. These hard topics are played out by real life teens who act in the play. Most of the cast is from the Houston third ward area.

Fontenot believes the play is necessary to shed light on these subjects that have plagued teens for years. The same old "demons" have taken new paths to entice today's teens. The internet is one way teens and even younger children are being preyed upon or lured into hidden dangers.

The play will be at Houston's Wortham theater on March 13, 2010 at 4pm. It is a must see for both parents and teens. Most important it is way to get the conversation started.

Getting paid money for a day at the gym sounds too good to be true, but for the Lopez family it’s a reality. Jean, Steven, Mark and Diana Lopez are known as the first family of Taekwondo. In 2008, the siblings made history as all four represented the USA at the Beijing Olympics. Brother Jean served as coach to his younger siblings Steven, Mark and Diana. All three brought home medals.
Their history making performance has paved the way to making the family an icon in the sport of Taekwondo. The siblings have taken their achievements and built a thriving industry. They have opened their own gym in Sugar Land and are currently preparing to open a second gym in the Houston Galleria area. Top athletes of Taekwondo come to train under the genius instruction of Jean Lopez. “Jean is to Taekwondo, what Phil Jackson is to Basketball…he is the master” says brother and athlete Steven Lopez. Jean’s students come from all over the nation and the world to train under his mastery. Jean is in his tenth year as a Coach with the USA’s Taekwondo’s Olympic team. Crimes Crossing Borders

As a cold front blows in to Houston, hot topics are being discussed at the Transborder International Police conference. This year’s conference is being held all this week. TIP and their counterparts in Mexico (PIT) are coming together to train, share and establish relationships. Participating members include about 45 different law enforcement agencies. Their one mission is to fight crimes that cross borders.

A simple car theft is now not so simple. Cars that are stolen may be used in major crimes that cross borders. Drug smuggling, transporting of illegal immigrants or money laundering schemes are a few crimes that a stolen car may be utilized for. TIP members work with their counterparts in Mexico and vice versa to bring justice and break down barriers that may exist. A crime committed will be a crime solved with working relationships such as these.

Sharing of intelligence is one way to win against criminal activity. TIP(PIT) serves as an avenue to create the foundation of open communication. Today’s conference is a place where representatives train with each other. Together they learn the latest trends in crime and about the criminals who commit them.

This week will include educational and training sessions. A demonstration of an auto theft bait car and the OnStar GPS tracking system is scheduled for tomorrow. Organized retail thefts, terrorism and false documents are a few topics that will be discussed in other sessions.

With the opening ceremony being attended by Houston’s Mayor Parker, Harris County’s Sheriff Garcia and acting HPD Chief McClelland the TIP conference is off to a strong start. A start that seeks Justice as the ultimate end!

How secure is your home? Security alarms and a good guard dog may be your answer. However there is one easy step to further insure your family’s safety. Replacing or re-keying your home door locks. Often, this easy step is forgotten or overlooked. This is a small price to pay for a lifetime of security.

First, find a locksmith who is licensed. A licensed locksmith is regulated by the Department of Public Safety. In the column of keeping the wife happy, my husband willing went with me on a shopping spree. But this was not your typical day of shopping. With layoffs, downsizing and cutbacks being a growing trend in newsrooms worldwide, it made me begin to ponder what else could I do to make a living. After nearly 18 years at a top ten station and for about 12 of those years as Assignment Manager, I knew it would be a difficult decision to leave the news business. I loved the people I worked with and loved the hunt for a good story. Nothing is better than a good friend giving you a good story.
My decision to leave the news business was exactly that, my decision. I offered my salary and left the newsroom. No regrets, no ill will just many fond memories.
I grew up in a Newsroom. I learned from veterans that they themselves were struggling to stay in the business back then. A cagey veteran may have a treasure chest full of contacts and backline numbers, but they are a dying breed in the industry.
So I learned the trade of running an Assignment desk. Plain and simple if you don’t know the position you will never know what I did for a living for all those years. How do you move on in your career with this type of experience and skill?
My initial thought was to take the summer to explore my options and soak up the sun. I thought of becoming a Journalism Professor.
Then the phone started ringing. An offer here and there but I really wanted to take my time and enjoy not being tied to a phone, working a Holiday or taking a lunch.
Then a contact called me and wanted some advice on a case his was working. He wanted to know how to get media coverage. Then a longtime friend and contact called and wanted me to do a media relations course for his public information officers. Within the next couple of days, Magana Media was born.
I am doing what I know how to do. I find the news worthiness of a story and I find the appropriate forum for it. Sounds simple yet there is a need. In addition, I instruct law enforcement, public safety and VIP media relations course. After years of working with different agencies in a variety of situations this was a very natural step to teach these courses. Building good relationships between agencies and the media is something that I did daily while in news and now as service from Magana Media.
It took a leap of faith to leave the news industry, but it took the experience to form Magana Media. Placing clients in different markets, keeping up with the social media trends and maintaining the relationships with the different media outlets are my new everyday challenges.
There are no more scanners, no more short staff issues and no more driving into work during a flood, those were the days. The news will go on, for me I too will go on.

Retirement and education are wise choices to place your money. According to Mack “Lack of pensions puts more responsibility on the worker to save for retirement”. Saving now will allow you a more secure future. Securing you child or grandchild’s education cost is another option. There are many funds including the Texas Tuition Promise fund that can be started with your tax refund.

You may choose to spend your refund on home improvements or a charitable donation which could earn you a tax credit. These are both rewarding acts. In regards to a home improvement it is far more rewarding if you will be in the home for at least 10 years. Make sure you get the worth of your home’s investment.

December snow in Houston, Christmas blizzard in the East and now another burst of Arctic air will blow in at the end of the week. Is your home ready for the freezing temperatures? Going for the Gold is not just a phase for the Lopez family, it is a way of life. The family is made of of Olympic & World champions. Jean, Steven, Mark and Diana Lopez have made Taekwondo their life and their business. With a new book, new gym and the Olympics of 2012 ahead of them, they have been a very busy family.

The siblings came together to write their inspiring story of their journey to the 2008 Beijing, China Olympics. Before heading to the mall this shopping season or turning on the computer to do some online shopping make sure to arm yourself to be as safe as you can be. With the Holiday season upon us predators of crimes of opportunities are out in full force. Preying on shoppers can be done in parking lots as well as in cyberspace.

You have heard the saying "shopping in numbers" is the first step to being safe. Always try to shop with a friend or family member. Remember, two set of eyes is better to look at your surroundings and be alert. Also being in numbers may deter a lone suspect from seeing you as a victim.

Most important, don't be a victim of a car burglary. When parking, pay attention to who is around you. Take the time before parking to hide from sight the GPS, laptops, cell phones or any other valuables in the car that may grab the attention of a thief. What they "see" of yours can become theirs.

Sugar Land Police have beefed up their security efforts. They have policemen in both marked and unmarked cars patrolling the shopping areas including the First Colony Mall. They have policemen in uniform and plain clothes walking the Mall and the parking lot.

Online shopping is a new world of crime. Scams, ID theft and phishing schemes are a new frontier for criminals to seek victims. Fake ads for hot items or "deals to good to be true" may catch you off your guard and leave you vulnerable to a would be robber. Spam emails are full of scams and schemes. The FBI warns citizens not to open unsolicited emails or click on unknown links. Make sure when purchasing online, to be on the actual business website. Do not be "fooled" surfing the net and end up on a fraudulent site.

Black Friday! The day after Thanksgiving is a typical huge day for shopping. Stores open early and stay open late. Special deals are offered to the first 50 to 100 in line waiting to go into the store. One store gave huge discounts on the popular video game Guitar Hero. However you had to be in line the night before. Many determined parents chose to fight the cold temps and get that special gift.

One friend of mine was determined to get her daughter a laptop. One specialty store had laptops for sale for fewer than 300 dollars. So her plan, early to bed and early to rise, there she was in line this morning. Only to find that her effort was going to cost more than what she intended. The specialty store had only a “limited” amount of those laptops in stock. However for one hundred dollars more she could have this other laptop. She strolled out of the store with a new laptop minus 400 dollars.

Any financial advisor will give you the same advice. Pay with cash only and stay away from the credit cards. These two rules to follow will keep you out of cash flow trouble. Houston financial advisor, Richard Rosso, suggest you make a shopping list with who you are buying for but also what gift you are buying for each person. Brianna's Story

Brianna Salazar died when she was only three years old. Her life and now death become the light that is now being shed to bring awareness to Pulmonary Hypertension. Brianna died this past August from Pulmonary Hypertension. November is Pulmonary Hypertension month and Brianna's family is on a mission to help save others from this deadly disease.

Pulmonary Hypertension is described as a silent disease. It is a rare condition where severe blood pressure develops in the arteries of the lungs. In children the disease may be treated with some medication. However a lung transplant is the only real cure.In adults the disease tends to progress slowly.

Brianna's story begins being born as a premature baby. Her first 5-months she spent at Texas Children's Hospital. Just before her 3rd birthday, Brianna suffered lost of appetite. She also experience episodes where she would pass out and sometimes turn blue. Doctors tested her and treated for several different breathing disorders. Finally, after a heart echo-gram test, it revealed she suffered from Pulmonary Hypertension.

Brianna is not alone is the fight against PH. 1000 Americans are diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension each year and most of them are misdiagnosed several times before their actual illness is discovered. The symptoms are vague, but shortness of breath is a common sign.

KPRC's anchor Rachel McNeill and Texas Children's Hospital are doing there part and getting the word out on Pulmonary Hypertension. Rachel featured Brianna's mother Sandra Aponte Salazar and Dr George Mallory on today's news. While I may have never met Brianna, I am proud to spread her message of awareness. Awareness that may save another child's life.

It was a perfect night. All the volunteers showed up, the food was good and all the politics were left at the door. The "Best in The West" BBQ and dance benefiting the Arc of Fort Bend County was a brilliant success.

Final count on money raised is still being determine, however a preliminary estimate is 250,000 dollars for the Arc. The Arc of Fort Bend County helps supports families who have members with intellectual or physical disabilities. The monies raised help provide a better way of life for their clients. Special Olympics, field trips and sporting events are just a few of the programs that are financially supported.

The timeless trio at the helm of the fundraiser are Co-Event Chairs, Commissioner James Patterson, Ann Smith and Jo Ann Stevens. Their commitment and leadership make the entire experience a fun filled and whole hearted venture.

There are so many families who volunteer and dedicate themselves to this event. It is a year long commitment to finding items for the Silent and Live auction. The businesses, families and people who volunteer are absolutely priceless in their time of giving.

Rowdy Yates of KILT again served as Master of Ceremonies. He is a remarkable human being who breathes the spirit of the event into the air. His job performance and keeping the crowd updated on auction items is on target with Super Hero status.

The who's who of Fort Bend County came out to support the event. The legendary BBQ of the Swinging Door was on the menu. Of course, the music of the iconic band The Triumphs had people of all ages singing and dancing.
It was my first year to volunteer for the event. I was proud to be part of such a great organization and the people who make it up. Go ahead, sign me up for next year!

Christmas Has Arrived

Tonight, I arrived home to find that my neighbor has put up his outdoor Christmas lights. I must say they look great. Furthermore, the white light display gives me a little feeling of excitement knowing that Christmas is just over a month away.

So, my question is, what is the appropriate time to make the Holiday transition?
A month ago several areas around town put their holiday decor up. Wreaths, Christmas tree cutouts, dancing Santa Claus fixtures now can be spotted hanging from traffic lights and street lamps. Ribbons, bows and garland are now wrapped, tied and strung along doorways and staircases.

And don't think that a little TV will let you escape the reality of the arrival of the Holiday Season. Commercials are now filled with advertising promoting shopping, gifts ideas and the Holiday spirit. Some of the commercials are little dramas that end with a slogan such as... "Every kiss begins with Kay".

Now, if you abide by my mother's rule she believes the decorating, including the Christmas tree, needs to be done by Thanksgiving. This is the rule I learned as a child, that now as an adult I follow. I like to think of it as a family tradition. Depending on who you asked, the timing of the decorating revolves around personal preferences.

Decking the halls seems to come earlier and earlier every year. Fa, lah, lah, lah, lah, lah,- lah, lah, lah, lah....to a long season.

Fort Hood Massacre

As the tragedy of today's Fort Hood mass shooting unraveled, one common bond was the search for information. People turned to traditional network news coverage, news websites and other online resources. Concerned people and the curious are wanted to know more about the shootings. A huge source for information was Social Media.

As of tonight 12 people are dead and more than 30 have been wounded. The gunman is alive and under guard. Most shocking, the gunman has been identified as Major Nadal Hasan. Hasan is a mental health professional with the Army.

Twitter and Facebook were both used by those on Fort Hood to reconnect and check on each others whereabouts. Facebook users shared status updates on what was going on during their lock downs. Journalists used their Facebook profiles to update their followers with the latest information. Many reporters, producers and news personnel updated the situation in "real" time.

Twitter played a huge role disseminating information. Twitter had several profiles that were generating the latest information as it became available. Even the US Army sent tweets out in regards to the shootings.

It was amazing how the real time information was shared via Social media platforms. Most important was the ability for love ones to reconnect with each other. Others were able to get information about the mass shootings as it occurred.

Army officials at one point suggested that people on base to communicate by text messages. Cell phone usage was crippled during the height of the incident. This type of jammed communication took place after the mass shooting on the Virgina Tech campus.

There were countless other ways that Social Media was used. The first look at the shooter was through a picture that was found of him on the internet. Also, the Department of Defense released video showing the scene as first responders arrived. The video was able to be linked on facebook profiles and on twitter profiles.

Tonight, as details still are being sorted out, people are still using a variety of Social Media tools to get the latest information. It is comforting to know that in a time of crisis we can depend on each other through the web.

Tis the season of holiday cheer and decor. This festive time of the year can be filled with financial burdens and rising debt for some. As an early holiday gift, Houston financial guru Richard Rosso, will be giving out a daily tip on how to fight off debt and survive this holiday shopping season.

Social media is so popular. What is it? Simply said it is the internet and the glorious tools we utilize daily to help us communicate with each other and be kept informed. Emails, social networking sites and applications for your cell phones are all a part of a growing trend.

Yesterday, I taught a entire course on Social Media trends to a group of law enforcement officers representing agencies from all over the State of Texas. We discussed facebook, twitter, you tube and many other online tools that help communicate a message to a targeted audience.

With law enforcement agencies joining the trend of this type of mass communication, who benefits? You and your family benefit. No longer do you have to wait to find out about crime in your area. Safety tips and crime alerts can be obtain through these resources. There is a large amount of information you may be looking for to better serve your family and your community.

Most cities or police departments have websites, some have facebook fan pages, and others have twitter accounts. All these online resources help you stay "in the know" about what is going on. Swine flu stats, holiday shopping tips and predator alerts are posted.

Most of these tools can be used with applications for your cell phones or desk tops to help you be in the know at your fingertips. It is no longer necessary to wait by the tv for the latest information. You have control to search and find the information you need and want on your own.

The first step you need to take is to find your local police on line. Become a fan of their facebook fan page or begin following them on twitter. While you may be on the go, you still can be in the know.

Traffic Trouble

Many residents make their homes in the Sugar Land, Richmond and Rosenberg areas along the Highway 59 stretch. For these Fort Bend county residents a commute home can vary from 30 minutes to over an hour.

The trouble is easily spotted as you encounter the back up on Highway 59 going southbound just before the Grand Parkway. Rush hour traffic slows down to a crawl as 4 lanes of traffic and an additional HOV lane merge together into a two lane highway. Here, drivers try to merge into the two lanes of traffic that continue southbound.

The traffic slow down begins as some drivers exit at the Grand Parkway. Grocery shopping, a fitness gym and some fast food restaurants as well as several neighborhoods are the destinations for many who take the Grand Parkway exit. A short distance later there is an on ramp that have cars steadily entering the southbound lanes of 59. This on and off traffic causes drivers to slow down and as they try to jockey for their necessary lanes.

Just a couple of years ago, highway 59 was a brutal commute. However construction of additional lanes and the addition of the HOV lanes have made the route more than bearable.

The bottleneck backup of the southbound lanes have made more than one resident question the construction design. The growth and needs of the community exceed the current design.

More than once I have personally sat in traffic thinking there must have been an accident. Only to discover that there is no accident, it is just traffic.

The rush hour typically begins after 4pm. By 5pm commuters are facing major traffic tie ups.
Patience and good driving habits will help make the ride home a little less stressful.

Flu Shots In Demand

Flu season is here and seems to be widespread. The seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu have kept doctors' offices and pharmacies swamped with patients wanting to get their flu shots and vaccines. The demand has been far greater than the supply. Many offices are out of the vaccines and have started waiting lists for the shot.
Recently, one elderly couple had to call 5 different doctors to finally find the seasonal flu shot. The problems they ran into were doctors offices' being out of supply or the doctor had to see them before administering the shot.
One mother of three is on a list for the swine flu vaccine. Her kids have been trying to get the shot since the beginning of October. Now her pediatrician advised her to check back next week. .
The demand for the shots have people exploring their options. Some general practitioners are out of their shot supply. One local doctor's office advised a patient to go to one of the local pharmacies. Walgreens, CVS and other pharmacies have days where they will give the flu shots. Another Mom is on a list for the swine flu vaccine at her Gynecologist. Between shots, it is suggested you wait 22 days.
Health officials still advise washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing into the bent of you elbow and staying home if you are sick. All these considerations will help you beat the germs that could cause you to be sick.

Grocery Shopping, A Little Closer to Home

Grocery shopping options are growing for Fort Bend County residents. A new Kroger Marketplace is set to open on December 4, 2009. From fresh fruits and vegetables to flu shots and holiday party trays, all will be readily available for your shopping convenience.

The Kroger is located at in the Brazos Town Center on the northbound lanes of 59 near FM 762. The Kroger store includes a gas station, a Fred Meyer Jewelry store, a pharmacy and full service meat center.

At this time Richmond and surrounding area residents have to head to Sugar Land or into Rosenberg for their grocery shopping needs. Consumers will be able to compare prices and look for the best deal. This is welcoming for families on a tight budget.

Kroger is the latest business to open up in the area. Several new restaurants have open in the area. A Cracker Barrel will open on November 3, 2009 and a Chinese food restaurant will open soon.

The new Kroger will make a trip to the grocery store that much closer.

Terrorism Training in Our Town

Terrorism in our county, is it possible? As a sad reminder of the times we live in, Sunday evening Sugar Land police and fire department along with several surrounding law enforcement agencies conducted a terrorism drill. The drill was part of a training exercise that was conducted at the First Colony Mall.

The exercise gave participants training on dealing with a hostage situation. Sugar Land police try to plan for emergency response to any situation that may come up. This scenario could happen here or in any town.

This drill was a joint effort between SWAT team, Fort Bend ISD, Stafford and Missouri City police departments. This type of training keeps all the agencies involved a good practice run on inter-agency communication, response time and procedures.

Since the attacks on September 11, 2001 our government has set up guidelines for law enforcement and public safety officials to work by to establish good communication, resource management and chain of command to respond to a variety of scenarios. National Incident Management Systems is the set of guidelines and procedures that is used at local, state and national levels.

The good news is that our local law enforcement agencies are training and preparing for our safety. This gives residents another reason to be proud to live in Fort Bend County.

New Chief

Brownsboro is a small East Texas town that is Southeast of Dallas. It is a fairly small town with more churches to choose from than grocery stores. The town has nearly 800 residents. Today, one of those lifelong residents became Chief of Police. Thomas Robertson was sworn In by Mayor Ronny Harris as Chief at this afternoon’s city council meeting.

Chief Robertson is taking over duties from retiring Chief Ron Shields. Shields is battling cancer and retired at the end of August.

Robertson comes to Brownsboro Police department from Henderson County Sheriff’s Department. There he served 12 years as a deputy and Sergeant. While at Henderson County he worked as a deputy in the jail, on patrol and with SWAT team.

Chief Robertson has a dedication and commitment to the town of Brownsboro. He has many relatives in the area who all attended today’s ceremony. Robertson is active in the community and a proud resident. He has coached his daughter’s Little Dribblers basketball team, can be found at the high school football game or just hanging out with family and friends.

Chief Robertson is married to Laura and they have two daughters.

Congratulations, brother in law. It’s well deserved.

Negative Flu

We all know of the Swine flu, the regular flu and now we are learning of the Negative Flu. The Negative flu is a strain of the flu that is not detected on a flu test. The symptoms are similar and last about 5 to 6 days.

Recently my friend suffered from what her doctor referred to as the Negative Flu. She was surprised to learn that she was diagnosed with any flu since she did have her flu shot. However, most health officials tell us that having the flu shot is not a guarantee of not acquiring a case of the flu.

Emergency rooms and doctors’ offices remain flooded with patients suffering flu like symptoms. The Texas department of State Health Services (DSHS) classifies the current flu status as widespread. According to the agency’s web site the “widespread” classification is used when there are increases in flu-like illnesses and recent lab-confirmed flu cases in at least half of the state's regions.

DSHS has confirmed 18 flu-associated pediatric deaths in Texas from the start of the 2008-2009 flu season last fall till now. In addition, as of September H1N1 claim the lives of 2 people in Fort Bend County and 3 people in Harris County.

With flu season in full swing with different strains it is important to practice prevention. DSHS reminds us to wash hands frequently. Cover coughs and sneezes. Stay home if you’re sick. Have a plan to care for sick family members at home.

Heart of a Champion

One of Sugar Land’s favorite heroes is Olympian Diana Lopez. The bronze Olympian & former gold medal World champion has a busy training schedule. Today, Diana took the time to stop by Austin Parkway Elementary as part of their celebration on Hispanic Heritage Month.

Diana spoke to the entire student body of her family’s quest of the American Dream. With her father in the crowd, Diana spoke of her parents’ path from Nicaragua to New York. Both her parents learned to speak English and raised their children in America. It was here in Texas that the family planted their roots in the sport of Taekwondo.

Diana and her brothers were raised with a incredible dedication to family and a commitment to the sport. The Lopez family all train together. Older brother Jean coaches siblings Steven, Mark and Diana. Later this month the brothers will be competing in the World championships in Denmark.

Diana taught the students today several moves. Each student was able to touch the Olympic medal. She was a hit with the student body.

KPRC’s Daniella Guzman also attended the festivities. Guzman once was a student at Austin Parkway Elementary. She and Diana connected with the kids and proved why they are both champions in their own fields.

Right now, Diana is striving for 2012 Olympics in London. We will all be cheering for her.

My Hispanic Heritage

America is a melting pot of race, religion and culture. Irish, German, Asian and Latin are just a few ethnicities that form our Country. Hispanics are one of the fast growing cultures in America. From September 15, 2009 to October 15, 2009 there is a 30-day long celebration to observe Hispanic Heritage. This period recognizes the contributions of Hispanic Americans to promote their heritage and culture.

While most celebrations include the reflections of Ballet Folkloric dances and the iconic sounds of a Mariachi band, my personal observance is far from the traditional. That is the beauty of being a Hispanic in America, you are raised with influences of your surroundings but you have your heritage as a foundation.

My influences of the rich traditions of the Hispanic culture come from my parents. The inspiration of faith is embedded in me from my mother’s unshaken strength. She taught me my first prayers and introduced me to my relationship to God. Her preservation of family and values was a standard in our upbringing. No matter if it was through a simple Sunday dinner or a Holiday feast, it has been my mother’s cooking that has bonded our family around a dining table.

My father’s influences are deeply entrenched throughout my brothers and sisters. His influences of the Hispanic culture are indisputably those of any good father. His teachings gave us an undeniable work ethic. He believed in hard work being applied to our education, our athleticism, and our jobs all would make us champions in our fields. He instilled in us a voice to be heard and to stand up in for what you believe in. This prideful man is the epitome of a patriarch in a family. His love is relentless and his spirit is giving.

My parents gave me a foundation that let me build my beliefs and ideals on respecting where I came from while striving to be who I am and not what I am.

September 15 kicks off the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for 5 Latin American countries in 1821. Days following several other countries including Mexico also celebrate their independence. Of course we as Americans celebrate July 4th as our Independence Day.

It is easily said I am proud of who I am. I am proud that the brilliant traditions of a Hispanic Heritage that are forever intertwined in my standards of life. While my upbringing may not be dressed with typical traditions of Hispanic Heritage, it is full of our families’ traditions.

For the kids the bright lights and sounds of the carnival are irresistible. There is no doubt the Midway is the favorite spot for most of the younger generation. Ferris wheel, scream rides and carny games with big stuffed animals keep kids.

If food is your ticket, you have a few options. Funnel cakes, roasted corn and turkey legs are all on the menu. However veteran fair goers may have their favorites. My personal favorite food vendor is the St John Fisher Catholic Church Mexican food booth. Tamales, tacos and stuffed jalapenos have an incredible taste and flavor. They have been able to serve up good food and maintain a wonderful reputation for years. I am not sure who is cooking, but I am thinking a Bobby Flay showdown needs to be considered.

Returning for the second year as entertainment is the Michael Mezmer Comedy Hypnosis Show. This show is fun for the entire family. Several people from the audience go under hypnosis and do some funny & silly things. One of the most enjoyable parts of the show is to know some of these gutsy volunteers who are randomly picked from the audience. This is a sleeper hit at the fair and a must see show.

Shopping, Shopping and more Shopping. There are indoor and outdoor vendors with a long list of items for sale. If you are into bling, there are several booths that will shine bright to you. Everything from Jewelry, purses and funky flip flops can be found.

Animal action and attractions are all over the fairgrounds. Kids 4H and FFA projects can be found in the livestock barn. The most rewarding is watching kids show their animals they have raised all summer. Pigs, lambs, steers and rabbit and many more can be seen. In the Rodeo arena, every night you will see some type of competition. Cowboy and cowgirls will show off their riding skill and horsemanship.

Live music, art exhibits, a wine bistro and several other attractions can all be found at this year’s fair. The fair gates & midway open at 5pm during the week and at noon on Saturday.

The cost of a ticket for admission = 10 dollars, the cost of a funnel cake = 3 dollars, the cost of supporting youth = PRICELESS!

I love living in Fort Bend County for so many reasons. We come together as a community in times of laughter, troubles and triumphs. Today, at Safari Texas Ranch, a luncheon and fashion show was held featuring five women for their commitments to our wonderful County. This year’s Jewels of Fort Bend County being honored were, Billie Neuhaus, Donna Kay Tucker, Ann Smith, Lizz Sansone and May Tape.

I am honored to be in a community where these fine women set the standards in their work with in a variety of different organizations. Our County Fair, the Arts, Youth and Seniors Citizens programs and countless other causes have benefited from these women's efforts. I personally know three of the five women. Actually, they have known me since I was a child. I am so grateful to be raised around such pillars of the community.

Donna Kay Tucker has been a victor in life and principal of many causes. Her support of the sport of Rodeo is enduring. From professional rodeo to local youth events she has stepped up and in as a believer of the sport. For years she stood in the shadow of the Miss Rodeo America crown, all in the glory of the sport of rodeo. She is a true ambassador of the sport.

Ann Smith has been a supporter and a pioneer to many causes that remain close to her. She is the flying eagle of the ARC’s fundraising. “Best in the West” benefits The Arc of Fort Bend County. Funds raised help maintain group homes, activity and work centers and provides for training and transportation of citizens with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Billie Neuhaus, I know best. By no means let her age fool you. She is as clever with wit as she has ever been. She is a lady who wears boots for a reason and not for the fashion. You never have to guess what she is thinking; she will tell you her thoughts.

She has been a strong supporter, a lioness of sorts, to the Fort Bend County Fair. In the early 1960’s she engrossed the responsibility of the annual parade, growing it to a community wide event with over 500 participants. Through the 73 years the fair has been open to the public, Ms Billie along with her family have been a constant fixture of the event. She has sponsored Christian concerts, World champion cowboy rodeo events and purchased a plenitude of show animals from deserving FFA and 4H kids. She sat on the fair board for several years.

She always arrived late to the Fair auction. She was not there for the grand champion front page bidding; rather she helped the kids who made the end of the sale. She wanted to make sure these kids were getting a fair and decent price for their efforts.

Lizz Sansone and May Tape were also honored. I do not have not have the pleasure of knowing the women personally; however the company they keep speaks volumes of the type of people they are. They are trailblazers in their relentless efforts of giving to the community.

These are five reasons why Fort Bend County is a great community to be a part of and involved in.

Christmas Shopping in September

12 days of Christmas should now be known as several months of shopping. Many holiday hungry shoppers are already purchasing gifts. Early start to the Yuletide season comes in many different forms from online spending to shopping mall Mecca’s. Consumers and businesses are reaping the rewards of Christmas shopping in September.

Retailweek reports that as many as 48% of the 8,000 people surveyed said they had already purchased some presents. This early shopping according to half of those surveyed is to cut cost.

Online shopping has special offers persuading shoppers to buy early. Get your gifts ordered and delivered in time to beat the holiday rush is a typical message on popular shopping Web sites. Web sites have important dates already posted for consumers to view to help with shipping. Google and Yahoo will be utilized for shoppers to search for the perfect gift. Facebook and twitter will be experiencing a large platform this holiday season to woo shoppers to certain businesses. Social media will be used more than any other year.
Cruise and travel agents are really pushing holiday deals. One cruise line is currently running a commercial with Christmas music. Cell phones companies also are doing a huge early push. Already offering deals on popular phones and incentives.

Recessionwire says that stores like Toys R Us have been luring customers with the promise of discounts on toys and retailers and Sears have promoted a Christmas Club card program that rewards customers for shopping early—and often—for their holiday supplies. Toys R Us is also setting up temporary holiday locations for consumers. Again convenience and costing cutting measures are the prime reasons for the early shopping.

Shopping malls and discount stores will soon be extending their shopping hours. For now, gift selections are already being placed on displayed. Shoppers can get holiday decorations for indoor or outdoor. Many craft stores have a large selection of decorations already on display for purchase.

Spirit of giving is upon us or at least with some of us. Here’s to a safe and fun holiday season.

Crime in Our Community

Detectives need your help on two recent crimes in our area. Armed robberies and commercial burglaries are being committed by several suspects. Sugar Land police department and the Fort bend Sheriff’s office both recently sent out surveillance pictures to help identify suspects.

Sugar Land police are investigating a burglary at All Tech Communications, 16126 Southwest Freeway, on Sept. 11, at 2:15 a.m. Surveillance video from the business shows the male suspect prying open the front door, removing a wall-mounted television and leaving in a black pick-up truck. The same business had been burglarized two months earlier. The suspect is believed to be connected to several other commercial burglaries in the area.

Today, Fort Bend Sheriff’s office detectives are asking for help in aggravated robbery at the Game Stop located in the 22700 block Bellaire Blvd. back on September 4, 2009. Just before 9pm three suspects entered the business. One suspect was armed with a handgun and ordered all the store employees to lie on the floor in a back office. During the robbery one suspect held the employees in the office and the two other suspects stole store merchandise and money from the registers. These suspects are believed to have committed other similar crimes at two other Game Stops during June and July.

Have you ever had a family member in the hospital? The stress of dealing with your loved one’s illness is at times overwhelming. Adding to the stress is keeping everyone updated on how the patient is doing. Family members are now utilizing social media platforms to keep family and friends updated.

Facebook, twitter and texting are options that families are utilizing to communicate latest information on family members conditions during hospital stays. No matter how complicated the update, the message can be sent to several persons at one time by using any of these media.

Recently a friend on facebook was coping with an ill parent. My friend posted several updates on how the parent was doing but also on how the family was doing. I found it very informing but also able to post words of support without “bothering” the family. This way my friend knew I was thinking of the family but not intruding upon their difficult time.

Facebook also was the source of information on a school friend who recently had an accident that left him seriously injured. I know prior to facebook, I would have never known about my friend’s serious injuries. I was thankful that I could send wells wishes to him and his family.

Twitter has been a brilliant way to keep family members not only informed but in touch with each other. One instance is in when you have a love one in ICU. ICU visits are restricted by time and the number of guest. Family in the waiting room can get updates on their family instantly by using twitter.

Personally I have been using text messages in group form to let everyone know of two of my family members’ conditions. While some of my family and friend are near a computer, all of them have cell phones. It was useful and resourceful to text everyone at one time to give them the latest information.

As medical technologies get more advance, family members stay connected using different social media platforms. These are just a few examples of the family circle keeping together.

Friends and family have been re-connected by the social network site facebook. Now, many law enforcement agencies and public safety departments are creating their own facebook profiles to keep residents informed of on-going events in their jurisdictions.

Social network site facebook is a free online service that anyone may join. Facebook works to connect school friends, helps family members stay in touch and allows you to create a community of your friends and contacts.

Now public safety offices like, Fort Bend Office of Emergency Management, City of Sugar Land, Missouri City Police Department, Rosenberg Police Department and Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office are joining facebook to keep in touch with the communities they serve. Residents can become friends or fans of the agency's facbook page.

Agencies are posting alerts and updates to keep residents informed on a variety of issues. Weather alerts, flu updates and community events are all types of status updates you may find on an agencies facebook page.

Fort Bend OEM's facebook page is very active. Residents can find out the latest on H1N1 virus, thunderstorms, road closures or citizens classes that are being offered. Other sites share pictures of community events and leaders.

So being in touch just became a little easier. Sign up and become a friend or a fan.

Flu Fears

Today,at least 100 plus students were sent home from Dulles Middle School for flu like symptoms. Most of the students complained of a headache, cough and sore throat. The nurse’s office had parents pick up their children who were feeling ill.

Flu fears have kept doctor’s offices busy. Most clinics have been testing for the H1N1virus as a precaution. While most test results for the more serious strand comes back negative, flu season is upon us.

More schools and districts will be challenged this flu season. Faculty and students will miss several days due to the influenza cases. Fort Bend ISD is working with the health department to ensure they have the latest on recommendations related to H1N1 flu virus.

Throughout the community flu shots are being offered. Pharmacies, grocery stores and even some churches are offering flu shots. Shots will range from $10 dollars to $25 dollars per injection.

Oilfield Road Renaming

As long as I can remember my childhood home has been near Oilfield Road. Now as part of a huge expansion plan the pioneer route is being renamed to Scenic Rivers drive.

This past April, Fort Bend County Commissioners approved the name change. Recently the signs have been put up in place of the old Oilfield Road signs. The old green and white street signs are now replaced with colorful red and white signs.

The one time two lane country road is now becoming a four lane drive that will be a main thoroughfare for several neighborhoods. Riverstone development has created and constructed a luxury waterside living community. Most of the homes feature great amenities and range starting in the $200,000s into the millions.

For all us who grew up in the area, for me the Frost Ranch and for some Pecan Manor, a little part of history is gone. I can remember when the bridge on Oilfield road was one lane. One childhood memory is a cow being on the bridge and the school bus driver did not know how to get the cow to move. We were all home late from school that day.

Oilfield road serviced several affluent homes that were adjacent to the property lines of the sprawling Frost Ranch. Oil wells, pumping jacks and cattle lined the remote road.

Today, I did get some good news. Commissioner Patterson told me that Oilfield Road will remain the name just off Highway Six. A sign was mistakenly erected with the new Scenic Rivers drive and will be changed back soon.

Dog Lovers Wanted

Soon there will be a new place for Rover and Buddy to hang out. A new dog park is being constructed in Sugar Land. The Pawm Springs dog park is under construction next to the Sugar Land Memorial Park at Commonwealth and University boulevards.

Sugar Land officials tell us the park will be opening next month. The grand opening is set for October 10 from 10am to 1pm. This is welcomed news for Fort Bend County residents who currently have to drive into Houston or Katy to enjoy a dog park.

Dogs and their owners will be able to enjoy a six acre area that is set as a tropical oasis theme. The park has a beach area, a palm tree water spray feature and a resort style pool. All is enclosed by a chain linked fence. There is also a shaded pavilion to enjoy and cool your paws.

The dog park is the latest amenity that Sugar Land Memorial Park offers. The park spans 400 plus acres. It features walking and jogging trails, a playground, a covered picnic area and a lake.

Dogs large or small all are welcome. The dog park provides fun for our four legged friends.

Two Million Dollar Crime Spree

J.C. Penney stores have been the target of several burglaries this past summer. The burglaries have occurred in Rosenberg, Texas, Pasadena, Texas and several out of State locations. The suspect would enter the store by cutting a hole in the roof.

Pasadena police have arrested Ricky Orlando Garcia and have charged him with burglary of a business. He is now facing charges in Rosenberg, Indianapolis, and several towns in Louisiana.

Search warrants were executed at three locations in Houston on Tuesday. Garcia was arrested at this time. Investigators estimate the total value of the recovered merchandise from the three locations at over two million dollars ($2,000,000).

Pasadena police worked with Rosenberg PD, St. Tammany Parrish SO, Harris County SO, along with J.C. Penney investigators. The burglaries in Rosenberg and Pasadena occurred in July.

Both Hays and Dallas counties have warrants for Garcia. Garcia is believed to have committed similar crimes in their area in 2008.

Shoppers Beware

A trip to the grocery store is a weekly ritual for some. For one Fort Bend county woman her trip turned into a crime. She was a victim of a purse snatching at the River Park HEB. In an effort to keep customers safe the HEB grocery store has beefed up security at this location located near 59 and the Grand Parkway.

Last week, just before eleven in the morning the woman was putting groceries into her vehicle when a man drove up to her. His ploy was to ask for directions, when the victim turned to him he grabbed her purse strapped and drove off. The woman was bruised during the ordeal. The suspect has not been arrested.

Now, from open to close a security guard is patrolling the storefront. Customers may notice the guards as they ride their bikes through the parking lot.

This crime in particular is disturbing for two reasons. For one reason, the suspect chose an elderly woman as his victim. Second, the crime was committed in the daylight. Both actions show the suspect’s desperation.

Fort Bend Sheriff’s deputies released surveillance pictures of the suspect. He was caught on video using the victim’s stolen credit card at area businesses. If you can identify this suspect or have any information on this crime you should call the Fort Bend Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

Nixle is a unique way that police are able to communicate with residents, businesses, hospitals and other law enforcement agencies of ongoing incidents in the area. It is a computer program that allows alerts to be sent to your email or by text message to your cell phone.

In cases of emergencies, missing children, accidents, police scenes and other situations can be sent out through text and email directly to citizens. Residents have the ability to customize what alerts they want to receive.

Nixle is free to join and simple to sign up. The service allows you to put in several addresses to monitor. Meaning you can monitor your home, your child’s school, an elderly relative’s home or your job.

Police departments and law enforcement agencies arouund the Nation have been utilizing the fairly new program. As of August of 2009, 1800 departments have become members. Chicago, Baltimore, Dallas, Ft Worth, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Philadelphia are a few cities that are currently using Nixle. As more departments join Nixle, the more communities will be serviced.

The lessons that Hurricane Katrina taught us as a Country are many. Communication was crippled by the massive floods in New Orleans. However, texting was one service that worked following days after the storm. Nixle utilizes texting as a way to communicate.

Roll up your Sleeves

Your help is needed. Major Jerry Clements of the Fort Bend Sheriff’s office is battling an illness and has an urgent need for blood. Officials tell us they are trying to get 25 pints of blood donated.

The Sheriff’s office is working with the Blood Bank to make the donations possible. Sheriff Deputies have rallied around the ailing veteran lawman. He is currently at Methodist hospital.

A fundraiser is being planned to help with the rising hospital bills. Clements has been in the hospital for several weeks.

Major Clements is the Enforcement Bureau commander. He oversees all criminal law enforcement within the unincorporated areas of the County.

Short Trip to the Hospital

Fort Bend County is a growing fast. Keeping up with the growth is the construction of new Hospitals. A quick trip down 59 from Sugar Land to Richmond you will see several hospitals that have been constructed, expanding or just being completed.

St Luke’s, Methodist, Memorial Hermann and Oak Bend all have expanded their hospital systems in our community. A trip to the Medical Center is not the only option for patient care. Many doctors who practice in the medical center have offices now in Sugar Land and Richmond areas.

Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land is offering cardiac care at all levels. From cardiac surgical procedures to mainstream testing a patient can receive this type of care.

Oak Bend Hospital has been a staple in health care for years in Fort Bend County. Now their Hospital is expanding in several phases. Later this year their facility located at 59 at Williams Way will be open for business. This is one phase the Hospital is undertaking as it grows to meet the demands of the community.

This year the Oak Bend Medical Center performed their first open heart surgery. Oak Bend’s main hospital will continue to be the stronghold for trauma care for their hospital system. The new site will consist of a 90-bed three story full serviced acute care facility. Healthcare services will include surgical services, women’s services, ICU, imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services.

Expectant mothers now have several choices where to deliver their baby. Most of the Hospitals provide state of the art birthing centers.

Hospitals healthcare systems expanding into the community helps the patient and the family. The convenience of a close facility alone helps the family cope with the stresses of a love one being in the hospital. Trips to the medical center could be costly due to gas, food and parking. Similar expansions in the Woodlands, Tomball and Katy areas are currently or have taken place.

While no one wants to be in the hospital, it is good to hear we have options. Be safe and stay healthy.

30 songs in 30 days - The facebook experiment

Economic worries and job security are current stresses of life for many. Chad Strader has taken on a challenge that puts the stress of life for him into a world of its own. 30 songs in 30 days is what Chad calls his facebook experiment.

Chad is on day 21 of his experiment. In a nutshell he is writing 30 original songs in 30 days and posting them to his facebook. Nightly his follows will log on to listen to his latest song of inspiration. On his facebook page he commented “I am a very frustrated songwriter. I decided to further punish myself with some discipline”. Chad is only dedicating 45 minutes to an hour daily for the experiment.

I have known Chad since Jr high school days. My best memory I share with him happened our Senior year at Dulles High School. Our Government teacher was going around and asking each of us “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As clear as if it were yesterday, Chad Strader said… “I want to be the lead singer of a Christian band.”

Currently, Chad is Worship Experience Pastor at River Pointe Church in Richmond, Texas. His experiment started on August 7, 2009 and will end September 5, 2009. He has many supporters from the church, friends and the community.

On day 14, the experiment turned to a near meltdown. The songwriting was not flowing to say the least. However, I personally think this night was Chad’s finest hour. He did an incredible song called “Nothing”. When face with adversity, Chad pulled through and came out with a brilliant and fun tune.

Chad’s favorite song of the experiment thus far is #11, “Somewhere”. This song is about hope and keeping your dream no matter where you are there is still hope and love. He commented on his post “I hope this experiment will encourage all who create to stop sitting on your material”.

There is just over a week left in the experiment. But like song #20, Chad is a man of his word, and he will see it through. His songs have touched so many and hopefully he will get a recording deal. Good luck and tune in tonight!

Out with the Old, In with the New

Recently, I purchased a brand new Toshiba Notebook. I go everywhere with it. It is small and essential to my business on the go. Needless to say, I am a big fan of the Notebook PC.

Hence the problem, What do I do with my old computer? I am not a technical guru by no means but somehow I became an owner of two laptops and three desktops.

This situation lead me to a business called Bass Computers. They are a recycling company for all things technical. Computers, mother boards, monitors and even telephones are stripped to their bare essentials to be recycled.

This going green effort is a little peace of mind to those who are eco-friendly. The computers are not dumped to end up in a landfill. They are de-manufactured to the plastic, metal and wiring and recycled in a variety of parts.

Bass takes in computers from businesses or residents. They have traveled statewide to pick up computers. The best part, there is no charge to drop off your computer. All you have to do is make sure to properly secure you personal information off the hard-drive.

Here’s a tip, just take a hammer to it and smash it into pieces or you could just reformat the hard drive. So go ahead and purchase your new computer. Log on, surf the net, facebook, twitter or what ever makes you happy.

Good food, New look

Texas is known for good Mexican Food. Lopez Mexican Restaurant is one of the best tex-mex dining spots in our area.

For years they have been serving up enchiladas, tacos and other tex-mex favorites. The restaurant prides itself on their customer service and reasonable prices.

Recently the restaurant went through renovations. The construction did not slow the business down for service, Friday nights were packed for dinner rush with faithful guests.

This week Lopez’s construction was completed. A new and larger waiting area greeted diners. The bar area has been expanded and now gives guest a choice of waiting areas. The new bar is fully serviced and gives a party like atmosphere.

What has not changed is the incredible service the wait staff provides. The entire staff is always friendly and eager to please. Most important the food is brilliant and delicious. Cravings for Mexican food are always satisfied at Lopez.

As Summer creeps to an end, hot temperatures remain in the forecast. The heat advisories for our area have been issued frequently. The biggest reminder is the electrical bill. For some residents, they will do anything to cut cost.

Style and Sizzle

Fashion, Fair and Fort Bend county came together for a good time today. The Fort Bend County Fair Luncheon and Style show was held at the Safari Texas Ranch Magnolia Ballroom. Fair Queen candidates and supporters of the event came out to help raise money for educational scholarships.

Many residents, politicians and pillars from our community stepped out to this year‘s event. Bling, boots and hats were easily found on the runway.

Congressman Pete Olson donned western attire as a guest model before attending his Town Hall meeting on Health Care reform. He says he is feeling good since his heart procedure. He is trying to get more exercise in his daily schedule. Congressman Olson says the residents have been passionate on the health care issue and he welcomes their participation.

One of the jewels of Fort Bend County, Ms Billie Neuhaus, attended as she does every year. She along with Lizz Sansone, Ann Smith, May Tape and Donna Kay Tucker will be honored next month for their contributions and support to a variety of Fort Bend County organizations.

The Style show is a preview to the Fort Bend County Fair. The Fair this year runs from September 25, 2009 to October 3, 2009. This is the debut year for new Fair Manager Susan Sillavan. She has worked hard getting to know the community and promoting the fair.

Parking Problems

Parking at the Harris County Courts Complex is a tough task. Parking in the area has been a burden for years. Recently, the parking situation just became tougher. The largest parking lot across the street from the courthouse is being constructed into a underground jury assembly room.

If you are at the Courthouse in the morning before 9am docket call you see lawyers and other court goers sprinting from blocks away to make their court appearance. Another common sight you see are cars stopping in the middle of traffic to let someone out in front of the courthouse.

Harris county officials say the new jury assembly room will provide a larger area to handle more potential jurors and provide them underground access to the courts. Most important there will be an increase in security. Above the underground jury assembly room, a park is being constructed.

Parking cost can range from $2 dollars to $14 dollars a day. Depending on where you decide to park, the walk to the Courthouse could be two to three blocks away.

Best advise for all is to arrive early and bring cash.

What happened to tradition?

Did you grow up in Fort Bend County? If yes, do you remember the day off from school called Fair Day. It was a tradition for students and parents to enjoy a day off from school and head to the county Fair. It was standard in our community.

This year Fort Bend ISD has eliminated the student holiday from this year’s school calendar. Budget cuts and a mandatory 180 day school year may have contributed to the end of the tradition. According to FBISD, staff and students that participate in the parade on Fair Day will still be able to do so. Participation in the parade will be considered a school activity/school business.

For years, Fair Day was a coming together for all the school districts and residents of the county to get together. An early morning parade with school marching bands, drill teams, ROTC members and student athletes came together as one. Politicians, elected officials, public safety members and every law and fire department in the county were represented at this small town event.

It was a tradition that was passed on for generations. There are many parents today that take their own children, who themselves as children attended or participated in the parade. Kids get to line the streets and see floats, antique cars and horses go by.

Many families would enjoy the day by attending the fair at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds. Kids would hit the midway rain or shine. The past two years Hurricanes Rita and Ike played havoc on the fair. But not enough to cancel Fair Day!

Recently I posted the disbelief of no more Fair Day on my facebook status. My thoughts of disappointment was shared by many. Some even shared their Fair Day memories.

While it is not exactly peace in the Middle East or quick fix to our economic worries it was our Fair Day. It will be missed.

Sheriff Who?

Fort Bend County has been changing and growing these past couple of years. Town Center developments, several schools under construction and a new museum are just some of the on going projects in the county. One thing that has been a constant is Sheriff Milton Wright. Over the past 13 years he has overseen the county and the jail.

However, he has said that he will not run again in 2012. He will retire despite a strong record of claiming victory over any of his challengers through the years.

Thus the question is already being asked, Who will be Sheriff of Fort Bend County? There have been many local lawmen who have run or have said they intend to run for the office. The election may be years away but the meet and greets have already begun.

Whoever runs for Sheriff, the candidates will have certain county wide issues they will have to face. The county continues to grow at a very fast pace and will challenge the winner. More and more subdivisions, schools and shopping areas to keep safe. The growth in the Sienna, Katy and Fulshear areas puts a stress on manpower. There will be a new jail already in place for whoever is elected to office.

The political season may have come early to Fort Bend county, the question is who will be hitting the campaign trail. Stay tuned!

Hold The Phone

Back to school for some families started today. Others will begin next week. However for all Texas residents effective September 1, 2009, drivers will be facing a fine if caught using a wireless communications device while driving in a school crossing zone.

House Bill 55 is a new state law that makes using a hand-held cell phone in a crossing zone against the law. Drivers who commit a violation will face up to a $200 dollar fine. Last year, West University Place led the state by being one of the first to implement the law.

The challenge is how people have become accustomed to using their cell phones in every and any situation. Blackberry, iPhone or whatever gadget you may have to communicate is a constant habit for some. Now, drivers are updating their facebook or twitter status, checking email or finding out the latest news on their cell phones.

The law does have some exceptions in cases of an emergency or if you are using a hands-free device. Traffic signs warning drivers have been put up in the Sugar Land area. Missouri City is expected to soon follow.

So beware of the new law and most of all be alert while driving with all the kids returning to school.

Who was she talking too?

That Is the question many Houstonians (Americans) are asking of Representative Shelia Jackson Lee. During a recent townhall meeting on health care reform she answered her cell phone in the middle of the event. This act, of what some are calling rudeness, was done while a Kingwood woman was asking a health issue related question. SJL was captured on video talking on her cell phone or what she is calling, multi-tasking. She claims she was trying to get the right wording for the answer of a question being asked. Others attending the meeting claim SJL was being briefed on the phone on who to Thank for attending the meeting.

The entire ordeal became a face book and twitter sensation. YouTube has the video depicting the incident. Local and National news have done stories on the now hot topic. I even admit, as soon as I saw a reporter’s face book status on it, I retweeted it on twitter.

From my experience as an assignment editor I can verify that one person can listen to a person on the phone, have a continuous conversation with someone standing at the news desk while looking up a number for a reporter on the computer. The big difference is, I am not an elected official.

The lessen learned from this hot topic is no matter who you are turn your cell phone off or put it on vibrate. If you’re an elected official, let your aids handle your phone calls and right wording inquiries. But most important don’t answer your phone in this type of situation.
